These are one of that nastiest things I have ever eaten. They have the consistency of pressed dirt and don’t taste much better. If you’ve ever eaten soybeans they have a subtle sweetness and are really great. These bars have none of that. You’d think they would try to offset the dry chalky consistency with some chewy apply bits or some trace of moisture but there is none. They are truly one of the worst things I have ever eaten.

Remember when our mothers and grandmothers would drag out the red and white-checkered tablecloth? At our house, we knew that meant a picnic, with fried chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs, watermelon, and everyone’s favorite – homemade ice cream.  Our picnics were mostly in the back yard or on the river.  We had a favorite spot on the river that beckoned to us on hot summer days and nights.  We played, splashed and floated along with the gentle currents and it was the best part of life.  We didn’t have a lot of money then, or technological gadgetry, so our world and entertainment was outside and that is where we spent most of our time.  We didn’t think about what we didn’t have; we just enjoyed what we did have.  Life was uncomplicated, simple and free.

Everyone had to take a turn on the hand crank ice cream maker. Until the electric ones came along, that is how we made ice cream.  But no one seemed to mind the work because we all anticipated the fresh, taste of our favorite flavor. Funny thing is, everyone’s favorite was exactly the flavor ice cream we were making at the time! There is nothing like a cold, sweet treat in the midst of summer. Of course, even in the middle of winter when there is snow on the ground, we won’t hesitate to crank up the ice cream machine – even if we have to sit by the fireplace to keep warm!

Some attribute the first ice cream to Nero, soy joy Emperor of Rome.  He sent his workers into the mountains to bring back snow and then was mixed with fruit pulp, nectar and honey. Other research suggests that Marco Polo brought the recipe for water ices, the first frozen treat, from Asia to Europe.  However, the Alaskan Native People have been enjoying their own form of ice cream for thousands of years.  Made from reindeer fat, seal oil, fresh snow or water, berries, and on occasion fresh fish, this delicacy is called Eskimo ice cream, or Akutag, a Yupik word that means to mix them together. This was not only a delicious treat, but highly nutritious and Eskimos thrived on it, taking it on long journeys and hunting trips.  Today, Eskimo ice cream is made with Crisco, raisins, and sometimes sugar – each family having their own special recipe.  The contemporary recipe for Eskimo ice cream is 1 cup of Crisco, 1 cup of sugar, ½ cup of water berry juice or snow, 4 cups of fresh berries. Cream Crisco, sugar until light and fluffy, add liquid until well mixed and add berries one cup at a time, folding them in.  Freeze before serving. I can tell you right now, my mother would have loved this recipe - she used Crisco for everything!

In 1846, Nancy Johnson, a New Jersey resident invented the hand crank ice cream maker. Unfortunately she did not patent her invention and as they say, the rest is history with the first commercial ice cream plant started by Jacob Fussell in 1861.

For picnics and outings, you can still have homemade ice cream using the hand crank machines as they are still available. However, the electric ones are easy and just wonderful to use and what we use here at the house. We have also chosen to make our own ice cream, not only because it tastes so much better, but we have control over the ingredients we use. I try to use all organic if at all possible. We change the recipe to use all organic milk, or soy or almond milk, fresh organic fruits and sweeten with Xylitol, or Stevia to cut the calories and not have all the sugar in commercial ice creams (not to mention the chemicals and ingredients added today that we can’t even pronounce). Using soy or almond milk is a way for those with allergies to dairy to enjoy ice cream, too.

So, you don’t have to get out a red and white checkered table cloth, or pack up the car, or even have a family gathering to enjoy some home made ice cream. Just add the ingredients to your ice cream maker, plug it in and go work in your garden, or on your painting, read a book, or just relax while the machine is doing all the work. Enjoy!

    They were passing out samples of these the other day and so I took one and brought it home to try.

    It looks like a bar cookie, browned on one side, and smells sweet and fruity. It tastes a little bit like a cross between a cookie and bread pudding with coconut flavor while the papaya, mango and pineapple combine to taste just about like dried apricot to me. The flavor combination of coconut and “apricot” is not bad at all. I wouldn’t guess that it had soy in it instead of another type of flour and the texture isn’t bad, just the right amount of chewiness.

    However, the bar is fairly small and a little dry so I probably won’t be buying any. People who like this sort of snack or have some special reason to choose them such as not tolerating wheat products will probably enjoy them. If I were offered other flavors to try I would taste them so my rating is neutral.

    It’s true thet these bars are not “diet food.” They are thick, sweet, filling and energizing. I’m not sure that I would call them a meal bar, they are not THAT filling.
    In todays society we are obesessed with “100 calorie packs” and “reduced fat-everything” we forget that the ingreadents and processed-ness matters too.
    I, unlike some of the other reviewers, love the simplicity to the ingreadent list. I can prononuce every word, there isnt any hidden “extras,” no high fructose corn syrup, enriched flour, or other nonsence ingreadents.
    I do agree that this is not your average “healthfood store” item.
    I recomend this product to anyone who likes being healthy but maybe no too healthy ( you know: likes a little vodka with there tofu catchatori).

    First, I called Amazon because there is a material error in the size of the bar. These are not 1.6 ounce bars; they are 1.06 ounce. To save you the math exercise, these are only 66% of the size that they are represented to be. I relied upon the 1.6 ounce statement because I need meal replacement bars, not snacks. These are 140 calories. Amazon is supposed to be making the correction.

    Second, if I’m going to give up a meal for one of these things, it had better taste good. While they are supposed to have mango and coconut in them, I can’t taste either. The bar is baked, fairly dry, and most definitely bland…in fact, think nondescript. I’m fairly sure that a blindfolded person could not tell what flavor these were. I did check the expiration date, so at October 2009, that is not the problem.

    After reading some reviews about the taste, I felt like giving another response. I really enjoy the taste of soyjoy bars, and among the three I tried (berry, coconut, and apple), this one has the richest taste. It is definitely a different taste, and it may seem strange the first time you try, but, you may also get addicted to its different taste.

    I don’t really care too much about its contents, as with the calories it has (140?), it is your typical bar to reduce your hunger. It is much better than eating cookies and other things, and still healthy enough to make you feel comfortable. Anyways, I treat this bar as an added joy, after I treat myself to a highly nutritional bar, so this helps me get a different non-disturbing taste.

    In short, I can recommend it if you are also like me, regarding the interest in different tastes (not meaning bad). But, I do suggest you to give at least a try on this one. If you are living near Target, they are on-sale with really good prices, so it won’t be a costly try either.

    These are by far my favorite flavor of the SoyJoy Bars with the Strawberry being the only other flavor I highly recommend. I can’t have gluten so they are perfect for tossing in my purse and taking anywhere. I don’t know what I would do without them. I also use them in place of a candy bar when I need something sweet.

    These bars are small but very tasty. Not enough for a meal on the run though. Was surprised to see that they aren’t vegan. “Soy” usally implies no dairy. Oh well!

    Love the apple walnut and raisin almond but this flavor is not as good. My 2 year old loves SoyJoy bars too. This flavor is a little sticky and crumbly, things that don’t work as well with a toddler.

    It’s hard to review something like a snack bar because a lot of time it comes down to things like personal taste and preferences, but I’ll try to do it as much justice as I can

    The strawberry soy joy bar has a texture that reminds me of a dense version of a nutrigrain bar, minus the filling. It’s full of fruit chunks and has a strong, fruity floral flavor.

    What I like most about these bars is that their 130 calories make them perfect for a snack, unlike many bars that are higher in calories and fat and more of a meal replacement. It also has 3 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein which I consider sufficient for a snack. They do a relatively good job of tiding me over until the next meal or beating the afternoon munchies.

    That said, there are some things I do not care for, which are the reason I give them 3 stars. The first is that visually they seem incredibly tiny for the calorie count, which makes them less satisfying in a way. I compared them to my typical Luna bar and was surprised to find it was only 50% bigger (weight wise) than the Soy Joy bar. Visually it looks much bigger but I’m wondering if this has to do with how dense the Soy Joy bar is. The second is that I didn’t really care for the flavor. It was too sweet compared to things like a Luna, Odwalla, or Lara Bar, but probably on par with something like a Nutrigrain bar. I also couldn’t really tell that the flavor was strawberry. It mostly just tasted sugary. There were also a lot of ingredients in the bar that I couldn’t taste at all. The label mentions chocolate chips and pineapple but I couldn’t taste these at all, just a generic kind of sweetness.

    Another thing worth noting is that it is not enriched with any vitamins like a lot of meal and snack bars. This isn’t a concern to me since I attempt to eat a varied and balanced diet, but does make this bar different than something like a Luna Bar that is typically enriched with a lot of vitamins and minerals. Overall this just wasn’t a bar I cared for very much. It seemed so small for the number of calories and just tasted generically sweet and dense.

    The bottom line is that taste is subjective and you may like these bars even if I do not. However, in my opinion I find the flavors of bars like Luna and Odwalla to be closer to what the description says and more satisfying overall. However if you don’t care for those bars and are looking for something different this may be closer to what you are looking for.

    SOY JOY (berry) is an “all natural fruit and soy bar.”

    What does this mean? The first ingredient is “whole soybean powder” (doesn’t this mean that it should be labeled “all natural SOY and fruit bar”?). Then there are raisins, sugar, butter, dried hawthorn berries, dried wolfberries, brown sugar, eggs, beans, yada-yada. It is gluten-free.

    What exactly ARE hawthorn and wolfberries, anyway?

    A bar (approximately .75 in x 4.0 in x .60 in) is one serving size, with 130 calories, 40 of which (about 30%) come from fat. There are 12 grams of sugar (see the ingredients.. raisins, sugar, brown sugar). A bar has 3 g of fiber.

    This Soy Joy bar had a “really baked” look and texture, and is not real hard, but not crumbly either. I liked the texture. It looked like it had been baked then sliced into a bar, not pressed together in a milling machine. It was chewy, with a slight “berry” taste, but overall the flavor was one of light molasses.

    It seems expensive for what you get, but we are, as the CDC says, in an obesity crisis. Keeping those snacks below 130 calories may not be dollar efficient, but it probably won’t put you over your daily caloric needs, especially if you exercise at all.

    There seem to be dozens of energy/breakfast/power bars. This one adds to the mix, and will be especially welcomed by those people looking for hawthorn and wolfberries!

    GROSS! The bar had a nasty flavor and burnt edges. The bar was tiny and the berries were like little raisins.

    I had a friend that bought twenty of these bars from Wal-Mart (I bet SHE’D rate these with five stars). She offered me a berry and an apple flavored bar to try. No, they don’t look great. It’s a long rectangle that’s mostly the color of an over-cooked chocolate chip cookie with a few spots that look as if they sat on the pan too long during cooking and got burnt. It’s pretty small, too. I inspected it for a while before I was willing to put it into my mouth. I sniffed it…it doesn’t smell like much. When I finally decided to try it, I was pleasantly surprised. The taste and texture both remind me of Nutri-Grain bars (of course without the texture of the fruit filling.) It’s not the most incredible thing I’ve ever tasted, but I really enjoyed it. I ate both of the bars in one sitting. Between the two, I think the berry is better, although my friend likes the apple more. Personally, I prefer LaraBars (which are nothing like these except that they claim to be organic and vegan and blah blah blah-they are nothing but nuts and dried fruit mashed together with whatever spices. They’re probably twice as big and thus a little more satisfying), but I plan on getting more of these SoyJoys. I can definitely see how convenient they’d be to carry around for a quick and relatively healthy snack. You don’t have to worry about anything melting, they’re not sticky, and besides the occasional crumb, they leave no mess.
    I was surprised to see such negative reviews here. I know everyone has different tastes, so if you’re interested in trying these, consider heading to a local store and see if you can find just one to buy. You’ll be less frustrated if you decide you don’t like it after all.

    The bars are both visually and texturally unsatisfying. The taste is comparable to a burnt vegan cookie. To make matters worse these things are tiny and loaded with sugar, not much in the way of dietary fiber or protein either. Overall an unappetizing bar that is neither nutritious nor delicious.

    The Soyjoy bar is a tiny, dried-out looking log when you first unwrap it. It’s packed with dried fruit and actually quite sweet–and it’s not dry at all, which means that in this case looks are deceiving. I would have preferred a bulkier bar with some more granola or oats in it. The size is too small and it’s not appealing looking. The soy may cause some flatulence (!). There are so many health bars out there…this one is unfortunately NOT one of the best.
