We purchased this machine in 2006, love it!
Tasty milk in less than half-an-hour; the soy milk produced can also be made into great-tasting tofu with a little extra effort and the tofu press that came with my machine. If one wants to make tofu one can purchase soy-quick coagulator from Kitchens Best.
The leftover pulp, known as okara, can be added to many recipes and can also be frozen for later use. In addition to soy milk, this machine makes wonderful rice milk and both cooked and raw nut milks. We like to add almonds to the rice milk. You can experiment with adding different flavorings and sweeteners to taste.
Cleaning consists of using a little care (as with most small kitchen appliances) to keep the power head out of the water while cleaning the attached grinding unit. Both the pitcher and filter are good quality stainless steel and easily cleaned with the provided scrub pad.
My daughter has accidentally dropped the machine into a sink-full of water, and, although I wouldn’t recommend doing this, it still works great.
We really appreciate the removable cord.
Last but not least was the awesome service provided by Kitchens Best staff!
I called them on a Friday afternoon, they said they wouldn’t be able to ship until Monday, yet Monday morning it was at the Post Office in our small northern B.C. community. We later ordered an extra tofu press and a quantity of tofu coagulant which we received with the same good service. They provided courteous and dependable service, a real delight to speak to real people and not a machine, a little old fashioned and we like it.
We enjoyed the comfort of an extended warranty though we have not had to use it.

PLEASE SEE MY UPDATED REVIEW BELOW
I decided to purchase this soymilk maker for rice milk, despite a previous customer review about the rice milk boiling over. Mine didn’t boil over, but the milk that resulted was so awful I had to throw it out. The mess was UNBELIEVABLE – I spent longer to clean up the machine than the machine took to make the milk. It was a sticky, gooey disaster. I managed to clean up the machine thoroughly and packaged it right back up. The customer service was great, though.
22 August 2008
The Soyquick company called me last week to let me know that a newer version of the Soyquick machine has just come out. It is model 930P. I was VERY impressed with the difference! The rice milk came out great with a smooth, even consistency. Rather than having the machine run the liquid through the metal strainer, I did that part myself with the strainer that is provided. The machine parts are SO much easier to clean up- took me less than a minute, nothing like the last machine. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE NEWER MODEL(SQ 930P) FOR RICE MILK and thanks to Kitchen’s Best! Terrific customer service!
P.S. This machine will not make rice milk that tastes or looks like Rice Dream, so don’t expect that.
As a longtime vegan, I was looking forward to owning one of these. Unfortunately, the ‘milk’ it generated — despite numerous recipes and types (soy, nut, rice) — was disappointing. Not undrinkable, but not anything like your standard store brands. Worse, however, is the maintenance the thing needs: it requires a lot of very intricate scrubbing, and if you don’t do it *immediately* after making a batch, it becomes nearly impossible to clean. Particularly annoying is the filter basket, which they claim *must* be completely clean, but which has holes so tiny this task is nearly impossible (and uses a disappointing amount of water, energy, etc).
In any case, be *certain* that you are willing to live with this item’s disadvantages before purchasing. The company claims a ’30-day money-back guarantee’ free trial period; what they don’t reveal to you is that even though they ship the product to you from within the US, if you wish to return the item, it must be sent to Canada. With the weight of the item, this will cost a *minimum* of $25 — which is a pretty pricey ‘trial’.
I’ve had the SDZ-5 for about nine months now, making 2-5 batches a week. I agree with all the favorable assessments posted here about ease of use and quality of contruction, but I do have some tips for its use. Here are my top 5:
First, my family and I found we didn’t like plain “undoctored” soymilk, at all. You’ll find that there are plenty of recipes on the internet for making soymilk that approximates what you buy in the store. We add 2T uncooked oatmeal to the soybeans in the machine before cooking. After cooking, we add 2 T sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1 T vanilla to the finished product. Very tasty!
The end product still won’t taste exactly like the brand of soymilk that you’re currently drinking, but give it a couple of weeks and it’ll probably become your new favorite. If you’re like us, you may remember that it took you a while to get used to soymilk when you switched from dairy. Same thing here.
Second, we filter the cooked soymilk/oats through a piece of cheesecloth rubber-banded to the top of the unit, before adding flavorings. If you don’t, you end up with with a fine, somewhat grainy sediment (okara) when you get to the bottom of the batch. You can get cheesecloth in a lot of grocery stores and kitchen shops. My machine came with cheesecloth for use in making tofu, but I found it so tightly woven that it tried my patience waiting for the soymilk to drain. Regular cheesecloth does the trick just fine. I rinse the cheesecloth and throw it into the laundry so it can be re-used.
Third, make sure to give filter a good scrub after each use (I throw it in the dishwasher afterward for good measure). The mesh is very fine, so it’s easy for it to get gummed up, and easy not to notice.
Four, use a nice big piece of cheesecloth in a nice big colander to filter out the “whey” when you make tofu. As mentioned above, the included cheesecloth is too finely woven and too small to be of use.
Five, once you run out of the little packages of tofu “coagulant” that come with the machine, you can use 1 tsp of Epson salt as a fine alternative. Epson salt is a naturally occuring mineral salt (magnesium sulfate). It’s perfectly safe to consume epson salt — it’s sold for internal use as a, ahem, laxitive. Happily, the small amount that remains in the finished tofu is too small to have this effect!
While it is difficult to clean I actually have found it easiest to have a dish full of water and then wipe down all of the parts when it has cooled down enough.
I have been making soy milk for almost a year.
Last week I made 4 batches in 1 day so that I can use it in macaroni and cheese. If I soak it at least 8 hours and only fill it around 2/3rds full I haven’t had any problems with it not grinding fully. I can get 48 oz of soy milk with only 85-100 grams of soybeans.
gift for my wife who likes soy milk and liked the taste. Works well and is easy to use. Makes soy milk in under 20 minutes. Cleanup is fairly easy but heed manufacturer’s advice and rinse/clean grinder blade and heating elements right after you make the milk or else the soy residue will harden. Noticed that I had to adjust/rotate the top several times to get the power switch to engage. Perhaps we threw in too many soybeans. Overall we are happy with the machine. Luckily dry soy beans are available from local Korean grocery stores.
“I LOVE my new SoyQuick Premier Milk Make 930P!! The name “SOYQUICK” says it all. This machine is quick and wow, the milk is delicious. It does not compare to the commercial milk I was buying. I am blown away and highly recommend it!! My Kids love the nut milk that I make for them for hot chocolate and I use the soymilk in their cereal for breakfast. I am really happy to be able to make so many different types of healthy milks. One of the extra pluses for me is that I have made a “Green” choice by not having to buy tetra-pak milk anymore. For our family this appliance was a perfect fit.”
I have had my soymilk maker for a couple of weeks and it really is wonderful! It is easy to use, clean up is a piece of cake and I absolutely love the way the soymilk taste. The flavor of soymilk I got from my first batch really has me excited to try more. I can’t wait to experiment with all of the different recipes in the book that came with my machine. I am so happy that I can finally make milk that has no additives. 100% pure milk!
I would also like to point out that the milk tastes great right to the last drop. I actually drink if before it even has a chance to go bad. The milk I used to buy from the store would go bad before the expiry date and there is nothing more frustrating and awful tasting than sour soymilk (my stomach turns just thinking about it). This has really solved that problem for me. If I had known that great tasting soymilk was this easy to make, I would have jumped on the SoyQuick bandwagon a long time ago.
All I can say is . . . I love it and highly recommend it! If there was a Siskel and Ebert of soymilk makers they would give this machine two thumbs up!
A good soy juice maker without a doubt. However, I don’t like being lied to. In telephoning and researching this product on the internet I was informed on a number of occasions that it was “Made in the USA” with Japanese stainless steel. When we received it from Kitchen’s Best I looked at the bottom and discovered the label which says Made in China. Had I known that I may not have bought it.
I chose/bought this SoyQuick Premier Milk Maker 930P because of the extra-ordinary reviews it had received.
I’ve used this machine for about 2 months so far and my overall experience with the product has been OK/Fine (that is, not extra-ordinary). The product does exactly what it says and does a pretty decent job at it. Here are some of the issues/reasons why I rated this product a 2-star:
1) Maximum milk quantity that can be made at one time is less than 0.5 gallons (0.4 gallons to be precise). Which equates to triple the work for making soymilk for the quantity we need. We are a family of four (2 kids & 2 adults) and we go through about 1.5-2 gallons a milk every week. It takes 3 times of making milk to have about a gallon. Which means I have to make milk about 6-times per week. So, unable to make adequate quantity of milk with one preparation is the biggest gripe I have with this product. Additionally, I don’t recall seeing anywhere (in product description or manual) where it states the amount of milk that can be made in one time.
2) The second issue is the plastic container that you’re suppose to use to filter the milk into when it’s piping hot. I wish the platic container/jub was of better quality.
3) Third gripe is with the filter which get’s filled w/ the okara (left-over of soybeans after milk has been made) while you’re filtering the milk in the jug. You you have to wait or discard the okara in the middle while you’re trying to filter the milk in the jug. The filter should be bigger in size to avoid the inconvenience of dumping the okara out in the middle of filtering process.
I’m debating whether or not I should return this product in the hopes of finding something better.
———–Updated Jan 22, 2010—————
I’ve changed my rating of this product from 2-star to 3-star to be fair. The machine functions as advertised. My complaint on the product is more on the feature (eg: being able to make more soymilk at a time) side than the core product functionality.
———————————————-
My husband and I had been talking about buying a soymilk maker for more than a year, but we didn’t until now because of the perceived difficulty with the process of making soymilk. Then, when I couldn’t get a straight answer from Silk about where their soybeans were grown, we decided to bite the bullet and get a machine. After reading a lot of information online and at this site, we decided on the SoyQuick 930P. This is the best money we’ve spent on technology since we signed up for Sirius radio almost five years ago. We’re absolutely in love with the machine and the product, and IT COULDN’T BE EASIER!! We’ve had it about two weeks, and have made several batches of soymilk and two batches of tofu. We use US-grown organic soybeans and have complete control over the product. My favorite sofar is the coffee-flavored soymilk. That, good and cold, is the most divine soymilk I’ve ever tasted. Instead of straight sugar, I used a small amount of cane sugar and agave syrup, along with vanilla. Just the best stuff imaginable.
We’ve also made tofu salad out of the tofu, and we’ve been going through the cookbook from Kitchen’s Best to figure out what to make next. We’re very much old kids with a new toy, one that will add a great deal to our quality of life as well as lower our food bills.
I used it for about 6 weeks without any problem, making my own soymilk.
…fairly happy with it until now; it is broken for some reasons; one of the light turns on and a few strange noises came out, then nothing happened; I think there is probably an electrical malfunctioning; will try to return this item soon….
It is made in China…what a disappointment…this is not a cheap cooker…
(PS. also, the metal contruction for this cooker is a bit thin for the price I paid…)
I bought this in Dec 08, and have used it every week since then. I got it because I wanted to reduce the amount of non-recyclable packaging I was buying in the form of tetra-pak packaged commercial soymilk. I had tried making soymilk years ago in a glass blender, cracked it with the heat of the boiling milk, and gave up on the idea until this came along.
The results are basically good, though the company seriously oversells the overall speed of the process, when considered from start-to-finish. I am a city person, and don’t have a whole lot of free time, so this is real consideration. I have a few specific tips for owners:
1) Dehusking the beans is an absolutely necessary step. It’s not optional. This can be done fairly easily by squeezing the soaked beans in your fist, over and over, and then repeatedly rinsing them, swirling the water, and pouring off the water with the lightweight husks carried off. If you don’t do this, the husks will partially clog the circulation holes in the blender attachment during the blend. In addition, the husk material, being mostly fiber, clogs the mesh of the strainer almost instantaneously, making filtration incredibly tedious. I sat many times in frustration, looking at the liquid in the strainer wondering why it was not dripping through, until I figured this out.
2) Soybeans really need to soak 24 hours. 8 hours is not enough. The longer soak produces a smoother, creamier blend. The manual/recipe book is wrong on this point.
3) The finished milk doesn’t keep that long in the fridge, maybe three days. I have discovered that if I boil the soaked beans and the water together for five minutes on the stove before pouring them into the stainless blending pot, the milk lasts a little longer in the fridge, maybe five days.
4) The plastic jug that the strainer fits into is pretty lame. First, as other reviewers have pointed out, it isn’t labeled on the bottom with what kind of plastic it is. This suggests that the company doesn’t completely understand its target audience, which is going to be people probably interested in recycling. Couldn’t they also offer a similar thing made of glass? Second, the metal strainer is constantly falling into the jug. You really have to keep your eye on it. This could be fixed with some extra metal fingers welded onto the strainer to keep it from slipping.
5) There is a long (2 hours) cooling-off period between the end of the blending cycle and the time when the milk is cool enough to pour into the strainer without risk of either deforming the plastic or giving yourself a steam-burn. As a company spokesperson has acknowledged in a reply posting : “We recommend letting your milk cool in the stainless steel jug prior to straining and using the plastic transfer jug. The transfer jug is simply an option to use for straining your milk.” This takes time. For those not at home all day long, it could be a dealbreaker.
6) You can’t use the “max” liquid setting or the frothing mixture seriously bubbles over onto the countertop, making a huge mess. I have noticed other reviews had the same experience. Why doesn’t the company mold the plastic motor housing so that there is a nub which covers the pour spout during the blend? Even with the liquid at the “minimum” setting, I set the whole thing in my sink to blend, to avoid any trouble.
With a little tweaking and some patience, the thing as a whole works okay.
Bought this machine back in Sept. 2007 to replace a different model. We make a batch of soy milk every 1-2 weeks. The machine works great, better than I expected. After a few months of use and quick cleaning, the metal filter clogs a bit. However, I also found that if you leave the filter soak in soapy water overnight before cleaning, it doesn’t clog.
I came back searching for this same machine as a gift for a friend. Highly recommended.
I purchased this soy milk maker about 1 year ago based on its pretty good reviews here in Amazon.
First one month, it was all good. However, it started to show wear-out sign not long after. First, it generated more and more noise. Soon we found that a bolt on the bottom was loose and detached. That’s probably the reason for noise. Later, we discovered that some whole soy beans can still be found in the maker or not completely grinded even after the milk making process was done. Now it’s a little more than 1 year old and we cannot use it anymore.
Great product and outstandding custormer service. I live overseas and they called me to check my electrical plug type and voltage, thanks!
I got this to save money. It most certainly does that. Loading soybeans is a bit difficult. Maybe upgrade models do that better.
